Over Jaap Boerman
Jaap Boerman was lange tijd werkzaam als docent beeldende vorming aan het Wartburg College te Rotterdam. Sinds een dertigtal jaren is hij in zijn beeldende werk geboeid door middeleeuwse handschriften. Die handschriften hebben naast een tekst met intellectuele inhoud ook ambachtelijke- en beeldende kwaliteiten.
Veel middeleeuwse handschriften zijn voorzien van schitterende decoraties die verlucht zijn met goud. Ze zijn ingebonden in prachtige rijk versierde boekbanden. Juist dit beeldende- en het ambachtelijke proces vormen samen vormen voor hem het vertrekpunt van zijn werk.
Zijn werk bestaat uit replica’s, eigen ontwerpen en werk in opdracht. Bij het opzetten van een werkstuk moeten de tekst, lettertype en decoratie een eenheid vormen die recht doet aan de specifieke vormgeving uit een bepaalde periode van de Middeleeuwen. Er wordt geschilderd op perkament, gebruik gemaakt van bladgoud en historische pigmenten. Hierbij zijn middeleeuwse werkwijze en receptuur bepalend.
De studie en het verzamelen van oude pigmenten maken ook deel uit van zijn passie. Het is dan ook daarom dat hij in familiekring: ‘de alchemist’ wordt genoemd. Zelf noemt hij zich liever: ‘verluchter’.
Naast zijn ambachtelijk werk geeft hij jaarlijks een cursus ‘middeleeuws verluchten’, workshops en stages in Nederland en België.
Medieval illumination
For Years Jaap Boerman worked as a teacher of Arts at the Wartburg College in Rotterdam. In his field of work he has been fascinated by Medieval manuscripts for over 30 years.Apart from their intellectual contents these manuscripts are highly qualified products of craftsmanship and visual arts. Many of these medieval manuscripts contains beautiful decorations ornated with gold.These manuscripts are bound in magnificent and richly decorated bindings. Precisely this process of arts- and craftwork is the starting point of his profession.
His own work consists of replica’s, personal designs and commissioned work in medieval style. Text, font style and decorations should form a unity that does justice to the specific imaging of that period in the Middle Ages. His works are painted on parchment with the use of gold leaf, gold paint and historical pigments. Medieval craftsmanship and recipes are very important by creating his work.
The study and collecting of medieval pigments and colorants is a part of his passion. For that reason he is called in his own family as the ‘alchemist’. He himself prefers to be called as a ‘illuminator’.
Apart from his craftwork he offers a course: ‘medieval painting’ and workshops in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Enlumineur “Médiéval”
Pendant une longue période, Jaap Boerman a été enseignant d’art visuels au Collège Wartburg à Rotterdam. Depuis une trentaine d’années, il est passioné de manuscrits médiévaux. A côté de textes purement intellectuels, ces manuscrits ont également des qualités artisanales et illustratives. Beaucoup de manuscrits médiévaux ont été illustrés par des décorations merveilleuses, enluminées avec d’or.Ils ont été reliés avec des reliures richement décorées. Cette combinaison d’artisanat et d’illustration constituent la bas de son oeuvre.
Son oeuvre se compose de répliques des miniatures, d’esquisses personnelles et de travail commandé. Pendant la mise en place d’ un travail, le texte, le caractère et la décoration doivent former une unité qui justifie le façonnement spécifique du Moyen Age. On peint sur parchemin et on sert de feuille d’or et des pigments et matières colorantes historiques, en se laissant guider par des methodes et recettes médiévales.
L’étude et le rassemblement d’anciens pigments font également partie de sa passion. C’est pourquoi il est appelé’ l’alchimiste’ dans sa famille.
A cóté de son travail artisanal, il donne les stages d’ enluminure médiéval et des ateliers aux Pays Bas et en Belgique.
